Piazza del Plebiscito in Naples, one of the stops on the Follaky Secret Garden itineraries

Eight days from Follaky

Itineraries for stepping into Naples without chasing after it

Eight routes designed to give the day a clear structure, reduce unnecessary travel and leave space for what you find along the way. Use them as a guide, not a timetable: opening times, prices, ferries and access should always be checked before you set out.

Act I

Nobility, horizons and the salt of the sea

Chiaia and the seafront · half a day · Bourbon elegance and the origin of the myth

The first day does not begin in a museum: it begins with a taste. Chiaia is the quarter where Naples dresses well, and from here the sea is a few minutes away. It is the right itinerary for the day you arrive, when the cases have only just been set down and the city is to be met slowly.

The great prelude — Via Toledo or via Chiaia, a stop on the Follaky itinerary in Naples 14:00

Via Toledo or via Chiaia

The great prelude

Naples is not visited: it is tasted. The journey begins with a tribute to street food, the kind history has ennobled. Two possible routes, and neither is the wrong one: a paper cone of fried food or a slice from Fiorenzano on via Toledo, or the real pizza at Donna Sofia in Chiaia. If you would rather sit down, Antichi Sapori Partenopei on via Chiaia is home cooking in the salon of the city.

auto_awesomeChoose the street food if you want to move straight on; the table if you want to begin slowly.

Stepping into the silence — Palazzo Giovagnoni, a stop on the Follaky itinerary in Naples 15:00

Palazzo Giovagnoni

Stepping into the silence

A few steps, and you are through the door. From via Chiaia 149F with the lift of the park, or from vico Monteroduni 16 if you arrive by taxi. Either way the same thing happens: the hum of the city stays outside, and the garden begins.

auto_awesomeBring a twenty-cent coin: the lift takes nothing else.

Walking towards Parthenope — Lungomare Caracciolo, a stop on the Follaky itinerary in Naples 15:30

Lungomare Caracciolo

Walking towards Parthenope

You come out on via Chiaia, turn right towards piazza dei Martiri, and in a few minutes you are at piazza Vittoria. From there via Partenope begins: the catwalk of the city, with Vesuvius that seems to lean against the ships. At the end, Castel dell’Ovo and the legend of Virgil’s egg, and behind the castle the Borgo Marinari: a fishing village that has stayed still, where the air tastes of salt.

auto_awesomeStop at the Broken Column and look at the little beach below: almost nobody notices it.

Suspended between sky and myth — Monte Echia belvedere, a stop on the Follaky itinerary in Naples 17:00

Monte Echia belvedere

Suspended between sky and myth

Three hundred metres back, towards via Chiatamone, and you take the Monte Echia lift. Here, on the rock of the people of Cumae, Parthenope was born, and from here you read the geography of Naples: the seafront, Posillipo, Vesuvius and the islands.

auto_awesomeGo up towards sunset and bring something to drink: the horizon does the rest.

The square of kings — Piazza del Plebiscito, a stop on the Follaky itinerary in Naples 18:00

Piazza del Plebiscito

The square of kings

You come down via Monte di Dio and via Gennaro Serra, and in five minutes you emerge into the most famous square in the city. On the right Palazzo Serra di Cassano, its main door shut since 1799 in mourning for liberty. In front, the Royal Palace and its historic apartments.

auto_awesomeTry walking blindfolded from the threshold of the Royal Palace to between the two equestrian statues. Almost nobody manages it.

Three tables, three moods

The evening gathering

Antonio & Antonio on the seafront, for pizza with a view — ask for the front row of the veranda. Pino on vico Alabardieri, intimate and modern. Antichi Sapori Partenopei on via Chiaia, the temple of the Genovese and of fish.

auto_awesomeAt Antichi Sapori ask for the Genovese: the pasta that cooks for hours with onion and meat.

The seal on the night

Salumeria Alcolica, in the Baretti, for the liveliest atmosphere. Or L’Antiquario, a speakeasy on the World’s 50 Best Bars list, where you are expected to be well dressed.

auto_awesomeFrom here to our front door is five minutes on foot. It is the right way to close.
