Beethoven's Ninth, conducted by Daniel Oren, opens the Teatro di San Carlo's 2026/27 symphonic season: Friday 13 and Saturday 14 November 2026, at 19:00. Both performances share the same programme and the same performers, and the concert lasts about an hour and a quarter, with no interval. Full details are on the theatre's official page.
Programme and performers of Daniel Oren's Ninth
The programme is Symphony No. 9 in D minor for soloists, chorus and orchestra, Op. 125 'Choral', by Ludwig van Beethoven. Daniel Oren conducts the Orchestra and Chorus of Teatro di San Carlo; the Chorus Master is Fabrizio Cassi. The soloists are soprano Louise Alder, mezzo-soprano Ekaterine Buachidze, tenor Stefan Pop, and bass Michele Pertusi. It is a symphonic-choral concert, not a staged opera.
With the Ninth, the theatre also opens its tribute to Beethoven for the bicentenary of his death (1827–2027): it is his only symphony in the season, followed by all of his solo concertos, as set out in the 2026/27 season preview.
November is also the month of San Carlo's origins: built in 1737 at the wish of King Charles III of Bourbon, the theatre was inaugurated on the evening of 4 November, the king's name day, with Metastasio's 'Achille in Sciro' set to music by Domenico Sarro, as the theatre's history recalls.
Tickets and accessible entrance at Teatro di San Carlo
Tickets can be bought in three ways: online via Vivaticket, by credit card only and with a booking fee; through the Vivaticket call centre on 892.234; or at the theatre's box office at Via San Carlo 98/f, open every day from 10:00 to 18:00.
Wheelchair users enter from the Piazza Trieste e Trento entrance, where there is a dedicated ticket window, and reach the stalls via ramps and lifts. Each performance sets aside 4 seats, in rows 21 and 22.
Friday 13 or Saturday 14 November: which evening to choose?
The two evenings are equivalent: it's the rest of your trip that decides. With three nights, you could arrive on Thursday 12 November, check in between 15:00 and 20:00, and keep the concert for Friday 13. On the afternoon of the concert, stay nearby: Piazza dei Martiri is about a 3-minute walk, Galleria Umberto I about 8, Piazza del Plebiscito about 9. Saturday 14 is the day for the historic centre: Via San Gregorio Armeno is about a 32-minute walk along Via Toledo, and for other sights there's what to see in Naples. You set off again on Sunday 15, and on that day check-out, by 10:00, is from Vico Monteroduni 16.
If you prefer the Saturday 14 performance, swap the days round: Friday in the historic centre, Saturday between Chiaia and the theatre. For the rest of the month, there's Naples in November.
Movimentale at Capodimonte, 14 and 15 November
That same weekend, the Museo di Capodimonte hosts Movimentale, a festival of dance and video art. On 14 and 15 November, Igor x Moreno present a site-specific performance inspired by Annibale Carracci's 'Ercole al bivio': two showings a day, at 17:00 and 18:00, in the Salone delle Feste. To see both, pair the Friday 13 Ninth with Movimentale on the 14th or 15th, or the Saturday 14 Ninth with Movimentale on Sunday 15th: on the 14th, the 18:00 showing is almost incompatible with the 19:00 concert. From Follaky, the museum is about a 20-minute taxi ride, setting off from Vico Monteroduni 16, or about 50 minutes by bus. For the Sunday showings, it's worth staying until Monday 16.
After the concert, a suite in Chiaia
