From Chiaia, Molo Beverello, where the hydrofoils for Capri leave, is 22 minutes on foot; Pompeii is reached by the Circumvesuviana from Napoli Garibaldi; the Coast by sea from 1 April to 3 November. “Naples or Sorrento?” is the question of those choosing a base for their day trips, and it deserves an honest answer: Sorrento is closer to Capri and the Coast; Naples is the city, with the evenings, the theatres, the museums and the restaurants on foot. Here are the facts — timetables, fares, stops, from the official sources for 2026 — and at the end our advice, which is not always “stay with us”.
The right question: what kind of trip is it?
If the trip is above all the sea, Capri and the Coast, and Naples interests you for a day, Sorrento is a sensible base: the boats for Capri leave from there too, and the Coast is just behind the peninsula. If instead you want the city — the Teatro di San Carlo 8 minutes on foot, the historic centre, the MANN, dinner in an alley, the seafront in the evening — and the day trips as days, the base is Naples: from Chiaia you leave in the morning and come back to a living city. Pompeii from Chiaia
The Archaeological Park lists three ways to arrive by train: the Circumvesuviana Naples–Sorrento, Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri stop, for the Porta Marina entrance; the Circumvesuviana Naples–Poggiomarino, Pompei Santuario stop, for the Piazza Anfiteatro entrance; the Trenitalia Naples–Salerno train to Pompei, with the Pompei Link shuttle reaching the Park in about 15 minutes. All leave from Napoli Garibaldi (the Circumvesuviana also from Porta Nolana): from Follaky you get there with metro Line 1 from Toledo station, 13 minutes on foot, 35–45 minutes in all. ⚠ The Campania Express, EAV’s tourist train, is suspended from 1 October 2026 until further notice: do not count on it. The Circumvesuviana timetable changes with the season: read it on the EAV website.
The Park’s 2026 tickets: Pompei Express, the ancient city only, €20; Pompei+, with the suburban villas and the Villa of the Mysteries, €25; the three-day ticket with Oplontis and Stabiae, €30; €2 for EU citizens aged 18 to 25; free on the first Sunday of the month. Tickets are named and entries are capped at 20,000 a day. The Park opens at 9: until 14 October the last entry is at 5:30 pm and it closes at 7 pm; from 15 October to 15 March the last entry is at 3:30 pm and it closes at 5 pm. Capri from Chiaia
The hydrofoils leave from Molo Beverello, 22 minutes on foot from Follaky along the seafront and Via Acton: the crossing takes about 50 minutes, 80 by ferry, and there are connections all year, with fewer runs from November to March and some cancelled in rough seas (source: capri.it). The 2026 fares per adult each way: NLG €25, Caremar €21.50 by fast vessel and €14.80 by ferry. From Sorrento the boats for Capri leave just the same, and the crossing is shorter: that is Sorrento’s real advantage. Our day on the island, with the two routes, is act IV of the Itineraries.
The Amalfi Coast
From Naples you go by sea from Beverello from 1 April to 3 November: the NLG runs for Positano and Amalfi leave in the morning (between 8:35 and 10:40, some from 1 May) and come back in the afternoon; €32 each way for Positano, €32.50 for Amalfi, €65 return. Out of season the Coast is reached via Sorrento, by Circumvesuviana and then bus or boat: that is the day when Sorrento as a base is worth more. For Sorrento itself, the NLG hydrofoil from Beverello costs €18.50 each way, four runs a day in winter. Our day on the Coast is act V of the Itineraries.
When Sorrento is better, and when Naples
- Sorrento, if the trip is about the sea and the coast, if Capri and Positano are the reason, if you come between November and March and want the Coast without the open sea, if a quiet stroll is all you need in the evening.
- Naples, if you want the city and the day trips as days: from Chiaia, Beverello in 22 minutes, the Circumvesuviana in 35–45, and on your return the seafront 7 minutes away, the San Carlo 8, the Plebiscito 9, the restaurants we choose ourselves in Where to eat.
